Wedding Vows/ Take Two

Kingsclear-20130707-00629.jpgThe other day at church we had, within the usual service, a renewal of wedding vows for a couple who were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.  When I first heard that this was going to be happening I was a bit skeptical.  I have as a rule considered the whole do-over wedding thing a bit pretentious or more an excuse for a party.  After all, it isn’t like God, with whom the covenant was made, has forgotten the promises the two people made 25 years ago.

While I have no intention of having  a public renewal of my wedding vows to my husband, I found this service to be quite touching not despite it being part of the regular service, but because of it.  After the sermon and offering the couple came forward (no ushers, bridesmaids, white gowns or tuxes) and repeated vows phrased as “you have…” rather than, “will you…” After this they spoke directly to each other words of thanks for love, support and laughs over the 25 years, and hopes for the next.

I remember when my husband and I got married the minister challenged us to repeat our vows every night for a year.  We kind of laughed at the time, but believe it or not we actually did.  Cheesy as it may sound, I think it is good for us to remind ourselves of those vows periodically, whether quietly at home or in a ceremony of some type.  God doesn’t forget, but we humans often do!

I __________ take you ___________ to be my _____________,
to have and to hold from this day forward; for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, and to remain faithful to you alone for as long as we both shall live!
